1976 Tyrrell Ford P34
Winner, Grand Prix of Sweden driven by Jody Scheckter
When Derek Gardner designed the six wheeled Tyrrell Project 34 car,
most people in the know considered it nothing more then a publicity
stunt. The Project 34 made its Grand Prix debut at the 1976 Spanish
Grand Prix but it's real moment of glory came at the Swedish Grand
Prix on June 13, 1976. Jody Scheckter put the six wheel Tyrrell on the
pole and when the green flag fell, Scheckter got of the line in second
place behind Mario Andretti's Lotus. When Andretti blew his engine on
lap 46, Scheckter took the lead and never looked back. When the
checkered flag fell, Scheckter was 20 seconds ahead of Patrick
Depailler who finished second. Scheckter's Swedish Grand Prix win was
the first victory for this most unusual racing car. Jody Schecter had
four more podium finishes while driving the Tyrrell Project 34 car. He
also finished third in the final 1976 Grand Prix championship
standings.
