Exoto pays tribute to the highly controversial and remarkably
beautiful 1976 Tyrrell-Ford Type P34 with this stunning replica in
Aluminum finish.
The P34 is one of those rare Grand Prix cars that dared to challenge
conventional thinking. It caused the rule-makers and the competition
alike a great deal of lost sleep. Designed by famed engineer Derek
Gardner, the P34 broke convention by utilizing four very small
steering wheels! The logic behind it, however, is as elegant as the
bodywork that adorned this Tyrrell racer.
In his own words, Gardners idea "was to minimize induced drag by
reducing lift at the front end and to turn that small gain into the
ability to enter and leave corners faster. It was a matter of trading
downforce for cornering power and it seemed to work."

He designed a 'bluff' nose section that cut the air in front of the 4
10-inch diameter front wheels. Front lift was instantly reduced,
enhancing cornering and braking forces. Other benefits followed: four
sets of disc brakes at the front increased braking power by increasing
the swept area of the brakes which in turn reduced operating
temperatures and brake wear. The rear tire sizes were dictated by the
rules, however; one can only imagine what Tyrrell and Gardner might
have come up with otherwise! All in all, the P34 stands as a massive
achievement of creativity that has rarely been matched.
